What is Identity?
-The condition of being oneself and not another. Who and what you are and how it distinguishes you from someone else.
-Your personal defining traits and characteristics that make you unique.
How is it formed?
Creation-
Jeremiah 1:5
Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
There are things about who we are that were established before we were born.
God formed those things
Genesis 1:26
And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness
We are a reflection of God.
The devil would desire to paint a picture of who we are and present it to us and have us to accept it. He lies to you about who you are.
He has a plan for who he wants us to be.
Isaiah 64:8
But now, O lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
God gives us an identity, it comes through him. Sin distorts and disfigures that image.
Experiences in Life-
The things that we go through in life reveal who we are.
Strength is revealed during adversity and if you were weak, things that you go through can make you strong
Before Christ because of the things we have gone through we may have a distorted image of who we are and it may be totally different from who God made us to be.
Your past cannot define you
Because in your own efforts before Christ you didn’t amount to anything or you were denied or cast aside and you esteem yourself on your confidence. God wants to take all of your failures and mistakes that have defined you and crown you with his glory and bring you back to the image of God.
Who we are is not based on what we do.
I am who God says I am?
It is important to know who you are you will act differently.
Chosen Generation—
Chosen—Greek word—Eklektos
Select, favorite, elect
Royal Priesthood
Priests-
Teaching the Law
Communicating the will of God
Blessing the people in his name.
Offering sacrifices- now in Christ we step into the holies of holies and offer sacrifices ourselves.
You have a position, a role and responsibility.
It is a position of Royalty
We are Kings and priests.
Isaiah 62:3—Thou shalt be a crown of glory and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God
Those with low self esteem or are confused about who they are can rejoice because God has given us an identity.
Ephesians 2:6
Raised us up and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus
We have a seat!
The Kingdom of God is set up higher than the principalities of darkness
Holy Nation-
Nation-A large body of people
We are the body of Christ.
Self Confidence vs. God Confidence
The Enemies of God confidence
Inadequacy
Self rejection
Low self esteem
Pride
Character
Who you are rises up in adversity
We are predestined to be conformed to the image of his son.
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed
More than conquerors, overcomers, fighters, warriors, God’s elect and created in his image
Words of God’s love
